I just got word this evening that Jim Cates, host of the Jim Cates show on 1440AM KMAJ in Topeka had his contract terminated today by Cumulus Broadcasting.
Jim had announced Monday that he planned to retire at the end of this year. Cates was told at the end of his show Wednesday that his contract was being terminated. Cates told the Topeka Capital Journal that he believed the move was related to his opposition to programming changes at the station.
There will be a rally in support of Jim Friday morning at 8am in front of the Cumulus Broadcasting station in Topeka. The station is located at 9th and Kansas Avenue, just a couple of blocks from the 10th Street exit on I-70. Click here for a map.
No matter what your political views, your voice was always received and heard fairly on the Jim Cates show.
Update
To contact the station & Cumulus and express your disappointment in Jim being taken off the airwaves, write the station and home office at:
KMAJ-AM 1440
Cumulus Broadcasting
825 S Kansas Avenue
Topeka, Kansas 66612
CUMULUS MEDIA INC./CUMULUS BROADCASTING INC.
3280 Peachtree Road, NW

Atlanta, Georgia 30305
The station is required by the FEC to keep snail mail letters sent to the station on file to be reviewed when their FEC license is up for renewal, so in this case a snail mail letter sent to the station and the home office would be very appropriate and beneficial.
In addition, you can call the station in Topeka and the home office in Atlanta.
Topeka:
Phone-(785) 272.2122
Fax-(785) 272.6219
Atlanta:
TEL (404) 949-0700
FAX (404) 949-0740
You can also send an email to Spike Santee at the station in Topeka, spike.santee@cumulus.com. Spike is the brilliant guy who decided to fire Jim rather than let him reitre gracefully at the end of the year.
Keep in mind that emails are NOT required to be kept on file for FEC review. It would be best to write a letter, email and call, but if you can only do one…send a snail mail letter.
