Late yesterday afternoon, Planned Parenthood of Overland Park held a press conference to announce they had a received a letter from Attorney General Paul Morrison. According to the Olathe Daily News (only current articles online, so this link will take you to AG Clears Planned Parenthood until midnight on June 27), the letter stated that his investigation is finished. “We have interviewed witnesses, and we have analyzed all of the evidence of the applicable Kansas criminal laws,” Morrison wrote. “…we will not be filing any charges against your client.”
Of course this is no surprise to anyone, as Morrison not only made this a key issue in his campaign in 2006, but as District Attorney Phill Kline says later in the same article, “Paul’s actions were predicted months ago and fully anticipated. For years as district attorney, he demonstrated an unwillingness to look at this kind of evidence.”
It remains to be seen what, if anything, Morrison will do in regards to the Tiller portion of the investigation. After viewing the video with Dr. McHugh’s comments, it’s hard to imagine how Morrison could avoid finding evidence of violation of state law. Will his long promised statement on Thursday or Friday be that he’s filing charges, that he’s filing minor charges of failing to report properly, or that he’s dismissing the whole investigation? News is potentially breaking on this as I type, so an update will be posted shortly if there is anything new to report.
