TOPEKA — Kansas Republican Assembly President Helen Van Etten today thanked Senator Pat Roberts (R-KS) for his vote against invoking cloture on the motion to reconsider the immigration overhaul legislation that had failed the Senate only days before.
“The Kansas Republican Assembly stands behind Senator Roberts and thanks him for his steadfast vote of opposition to the Kennedy immigration overhaul. As an immigrant myself, I know from personal experience that when you follow the rule of law America can open doors of new opportunity. However, this legislation clearly rewards illegal behavior and sends a clear message that our nation will not enforce existing laws.”
Van Etten noted that the state’s other senator, Sam Brownback, switched his position to a vote in favor of cloture. “While this is obviously a procedural motion, we strongly urge Kansas Republicans to contact the Senator’s offices, both in Kansas and in D.C., to strongly urge Senator Brownback to vote against this legislation.” Van Etten emphasized that Brownback could be one of a very small number of swing votes at the end and strongly encourages everyone to contact him immediately. [note: his office phone numbers are listed at the end of the press release]
Van Etten also praised the stellar leadership of Kansas Republican Party Chairman Kris Kobach on the immigration issue. “Chairman Kobach has been at Capitol Hill for days, lobbying against passage of the Kennedy Immigration bill, and has been raising public awareness through a series of excellent editorials on the subject. KRA appreciates the Chairman’s leadership and his steadfast commitment to protecting the rule of law.”
About KRA: Comprised of traditional Republicans, the Kansas Republican Assembly is a statewide organization working within the Republican Party to build a powerful, enduring coalition of economic and social conservatives.

Glad to see that Sen. Roberts and the Kansas Republican Party are standing up to protect America. How is it that Sen. Brownback can be right on so many other isues and so wrong on this one?

I realize that with the many phone calls coming into Senator Brownback’s office this week, you might have trouble getting through. So, I thought it might be helpful to some to be able to read any statements he’s put out about the current immigration bill under debate today. I can’t find anything specific to this on his official Senate website (although he does have some basic statements on border security & immigration there) but I was able to find something on his Presidential campaign website. If you’d like to read it, you can find it here.

I think Sen. Brownback looks at illegal immigration as a Biblical issue, that we should help to feed and house the poor. I think his heart is in the right place but his thought process is clearly misguided.
The Bible never advocates breaking the law to improve your economic situation…there’s nothing wrong with being poor. I feel for his cause of helping those less fortunate, but instead of giving the green light to breaking the law, let’s change the law and make it easier for foreigners to come here legally and work to improve their lives themselves. I think that should be the message we should send to Sen. Brownback.
